When it comes to optimizing your sites for the search engines, there are many viewpoints.
Some do not even want to tread into this area and it is understandable. Concerns about 'black hat' techniques and 'white hat' techniques abound. Who is doing the right thing? Who is cheating?
Some take the viewpoint that everything should happen naturally, and you should not try to do any type of optimization for the search engines. That would be ideal, I agree. But, the reality is that those who do take action with SEO are able to get at least some of the traffic they want, while those who try to let things happen naturally find that their sites are buried in oblivion, never to be seen.
Unfortunately once one group starts optimizing, there is no choice but to keep up. It is like any other area of competition in life. If you don't keep with the times, you are most likely going to be left far behind. In this case, the penalty is not having traffic come to your site - which defeats the purpose of your having a website in the first place.
Without traffic, it is difficult to obtain your goal. It makes no difference whether your goal is to inform people about something important, become an information source or even if you are trying to make money online -without traffic, everything you have done is diminished because no one will see it.
I think it is clear that despite the idealism in many of us, failure to optimize our sites for the search engines means that our messages, good or bad, will be lost. That is not what anyone makes a website for. If you have made a website then you most certainly want it to be seen with rare exceptions.
